Testimony in Practice

Working with the Stories of the Self and Others

Welcome

Welcome to the website for the AHRC-funded project Testimony in Practice: Working with Stories of the Self and Others. We are a team of researchers and practitioners from a variety of disciplines and fields seeking to explore how telling life stories through different kinds of cultural practice can empower individuals, transform understandings of the past and present and produce art that has a real impact on people’s lives. Our focus is on the lived experiences of migrants from Central and Eastern Europe now living in the UK.

Are you or your family from Central and Eastern Europe? Do you live in the UK?

We want to hear your stories!

  • What was life really like under communism?
  • What happened in 1989?
  • What is your experience of moving to the UK?
  • How has life changed for you?
  • What can 1989 teach us in 2019?

We’re looking for short stories, digital postcards and longer accounts. You can submit anonymously online. You can write your story in any language you feel comfortable with. It will appear on the website in the original language and with a machine translation that we will provide. At the end of the campaign, artists commissioned by the Central and Eastern European arts space, Centrala, will produce an art installation showcasing the testimonies to residents in Birmingham and London.
